A 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package typically combines iconic wildlife parks like Ruaha and the Selous Game Reserve with the exotic beaches and rich history of Zanzibar, offering a balanced adventure. Expect thrilling game drives, potential boat safaris, and ample time for relaxation and cultural exploration on the island. This itinerary, ideal for 2026-2027 planning, balances wildlife encounters with tropical island leisure.

Experience the Untamed South: Your 10-Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Adventure

Tanzania is a land of unparalleled natural beauty and diverse landscapes, renowned globally for its iconic wildlife and stunning coastlines. While the Northern Circuit, with its Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, often takes center stage, Southern Tanzania offers a more exclusive and raw safari experience. Paired with the exotic allure of Zanzibar, this region presents a truly magnificent 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package that caters to those seeking both adventure and tranquility. Top Guide Adventures specializes in crafting these memorable journeys, ensuring an intimate and authentic encounter with Tanzania’s wild heart and its fabled Spice Island, perfect for your 2026 or 2027 travel plans.

This carefully curated 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package is designed to showcase the best of both worlds. You’ll venture into the vast wilderness of Southern Tanzania’s national parks, home to an incredible array of wildlife, including large elephant herds, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and diverse birdlife. Following your safari, you’ll transition to the idyllic shores of Zanzibar, where turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and a rich cultural heritage await. This blend of thrilling wildlife viewing and blissful relaxation makes for an unforgettable holiday experience.

Why Choose Southern Tanzania for Your Safari?

Southern Tanzania’s parks are often overlooked in favor of their northern counterparts, which means fewer crowds and a more intimate wildlife viewing experience. These vast, wild landscapes offer a sense of untouched Africa that is increasingly rare. Parks like Ruaha National Park and the Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) are expansive, allowing wildlife to roam freely and offering opportunities to see species in their natural, undisturbed habitats. For travelers in 2026-2027 looking for a distinctive safari, the south provides unparalleled opportunities.

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park and is known for its dramatic landscapes, including the Great Ruaha River, and its large populations of elephants and predators. It’s a prime destination for seeing large prides of lions and is one of the best places in Africa to spot the endangered African wild dog. The sheer scale of Ruaha means that game drives can feel like a private expedition.

Nyerere National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its diverse ecosystems, ranging from miombo woodlands to vast river systems and swamps. It offers unique safari experiences, including boat safaris on the Rufiji River, which provide incredible opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and a wealth of birdlife, as well as elephants and other mammals coming to drink. The park is also a critical habitat for endangered species, including wild dogs and cheetahs.

The appealing Allure of Zanzibar

After the rugged beauty of the southern safari circuit, Zanzibar offers a complete change of pace. This semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of mainland Tanzania is a tropical paradise famed for its spice plantations, historic Stone Town, and pristine beaches. The contrast between the wild, open spaces of the safari parks and the serene, azure waters of Zanzibar is what makes the 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package so compelling. Whether you’re exploring the labyrinthine alleys of Stone Town, learning about the island’s spice heritage, or simply relaxing on a palm-fringed beach, Zanzibar provides a perfect conclusion to your Tanzanian adventure.

The island’s history as a trading hub has left it with a rich cultural mix, a blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. This is most evident in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where ancient architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant local life create an unforgettable atmosphere. Beyond Stone Town, Zanzibar’s coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

Crafting Your 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Package: A Sample Itinerary

While every trip can be tailored to your specific interests and preferences, here is a sample 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package designed to give you a comprehensive experience of both regions. This itinerary is perfect for planning your 2026 or 2027 getaway.

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam & Transfer to the South

Your journey begins with your arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. You will be met by your Top Guide Adventures representative and transferred to a local airstrip for a short flight to either Ruaha National Park or the gateway to Nyerere National Park, depending on the exact logistics and your preference. This direct flight saves considerable travel time, allowing you to maximize your safari experience from the outset. Upon arrival at the airstrip near your chosen park, you’ll be met by your dedicated safari guide and transferred to your lodge or camp, typically with a short game drive en route to start your wildlife spotting immediately.

Accommodation: A comfortable lodge or tented camp within or bordering the park.

Day 2-4: Exploring Ruaha National Park

Spend three full days exploring the vast wilderness of Ruaha National Park. Your days will be filled with morning and afternoon game drives in a specially equipped 4×4 safari vehicle. Ruaha is renowned for its large elephant herds, abundant lions, cheetahs, leopards, and the endangered African wild dogs. The park’s dramatic landscapes, dominated by the Great Ruaha River and its tributaries, offer stunning backdrops for wildlife viewing. Your experienced guide will track animals, interpret animal behavior, and share insights into the park’s ecology. Activities can include:

  • Extensive Game Drives: Covering different regions of the park to maximize wildlife sightings.
  • Walking Safaris (Optional): Accompanied by an armed ranger, these offer a more intimate connection with the bush.
  • Sundowners: Enjoying drinks and snacks in a scenic spot as the sun sets over the African savanna.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha.

Day 5: Transfer to Nyerere National Park (Selous)

After a final morning game drive and breakfast in Ruaha, you’ll be transferred back to the airstrip for your flight to the Nyerere National Park area. Upon arrival at the airstrip closest to your lodge in Nyerere, you’ll be greeted by your guide and begin your transfer, which will likely include a game drive. Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves and offers a unique safari experience, particularly its boat safaris on the Rufiji River.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in or near Nyerere National Park.

Day 6-7: Wildlife Adventures in Nyerere National Park

Dedicate these two days to exploring the diverse ecosystems of Nyerere National Park. The park’s varied terrain supports a rich diversity of wildlife, and the Rufiji River system is a highlight. Your activities will include:

  • Boat Safari on the Rufiji River: This is a signature experience, offering close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants bathing, and a vast array of water birds.
  • Game Drives: Explore the woodlands and plains, searching for lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, giraffes, and zebras.
  • Walking Safaris (Optional): Another opportunity for an up-close bush experience.

Nyerere’s vastness ensures that you feel immersed in the wild, with ample opportunities for incredible photographic moments and wildlife encounters. This part of your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package provides a different perspective on Tanzania’s wildlife compared to Ruaha.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Nyerere National Park.

Day 8: Fly to Zanzibar – Island Paradise Beckons

After breakfast and a final short game drive, you’ll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Stone Town or directly to a beach resort, depending on your preference. If staying in Stone Town, you’ll have the afternoon to begin exploring this historic city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow winding streets, bustling markets, and unique architecture.

Accommodation: Hotel in Stone Town or beach resort in Zanzibar.

Day 9: Exploring Stone Town & Spice Tour

Today is dedicated to experiencing the rich culture and history of Zanzibar. If you stayed at the beach yesterday, you’ll be transferred to Stone Town this morning.

  • Stone Town Tour: A guided walking tour of Stone Town will reveal its fascinating past as a major trading center. You’ll visit historical sites like the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the former slave market, and intricate carved doors.
  • Spice Tour: Zanzibar is known as the “Spice Island” for a reason. A guided tour of a local spice farm will allow you to see, smell, and taste exotic spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and pepper. You’ll learn about their cultivation and traditional uses.

In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred to your chosen beach resort on the island. The northern or eastern coasts, such as Nungwi, Kendwa, or Paje, are popular for their stunning beaches and clear turquoise waters.

Accommodation: Beach resort in Zanzibar.

Day 10: Relaxation and Departure

Enjoy a leisurely morning on Zanzibar. Depending on your flight schedule, you can relax on the beach, take a final swim in the ocean, or perhaps engage in some last-minute souvenir shopping. Your transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) will be arranged based on your departure time, ensuring a smooth end to your incredible 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package. You’ll depart with memories to last a lifetime.

Key Wildlife Highlights of Southern Tanzania

The Southern Circuit offers a distinct safari experience, characterized by its raw, wild nature and the sheer abundance of certain species. Understanding these highlights can help you plan your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package for 2026-2027.

Ruaha National Park: A Predator’s Paradise

Ruaha stands out for its high concentration of predators. It is estimated to have one of the highest lion populations in Tanzania, often seen in large prides. Cheetahs and leopards are also common, though their elusive nature means sightings can be thrillingly unpredictable. The park’s large elephant herds are a spectacular sight, especially along the Great Ruaha River.

African Wild Dogs: Ruaha is a critical stronghold for the endangered African wild dog. Witnessing a pack on the move or on a hunt is a truly remarkable experience, and Southern Tanzania offers some of the best chances for this. Planning your safari for the dry season (June to October) can increase sightings as animals congregate around water sources.

Birdlife: With over 570 bird species recorded, Ruaha is a birdwatcher’s dream. The diversity ranges from large raptors to tiny sunbirds, with many endemic species found in the miombo woodlands.

Nyerere National Park: Waterways and Wilderness

Nyerere National Park (Selous) is unique for its blend of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife viewing. The Rufiji River is the lifeblood of the park, supporting an incredible density of wildlife.

Hippos and Crocodiles: The Rufiji River is teeming with hippos and crocodiles. Boat safaris offer unparalleled opportunities to observe these creatures in their natural habitat, often in large numbers. You can witness hippos wallowing in the water and crocodiles basking on the riverbanks.

Elephants and Giraffes: Large herds of elephants are frequently seen, often crossing the river or browsing in the surrounding vegetation. Giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and various antelope species also thrive here.

Wild Dogs and Big Cats: While Ruaha is perhaps more famous for predators, Nyerere also offers good chances to see lions, leopards, and the African wild dog, particularly in the drier areas away from the river.

Planning Your 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Package for 2026-2027

When planning your trip, consider the following factors to make the most of your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from June to October, is generally considered the best time for a Southern Tanzania safari. During these months, vegetation is less dense, and animals are easier to spot as they congregate around permanent water sources. The weather is also pleasant, with sunny days and cooler nights.

For Zanzibar, the weather is warm and humid year-round. The driest months are typically June to October and December to February. The shoulder seasons (March-May and November) can offer lower prices but may experience rain. The combination of dry safari conditions and pleasant beach weather makes the June-October window particularly appealing for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package.

Getting There and Around

The most common entry point for Southern Tanzania safaris is Dar es Salaam. From there, internal flights are the most efficient way to reach Ruaha and Nyerere National Parks. These flights are typically operated by small bush planes and offer scenic views. Within the parks, game drives are conducted in 4×4 safari vehicles, often open-sided for optimal viewing and photography.

For the Zanzibar leg of your trip, flights connect Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar’s main airport (ZNZ). Transfers on the island are usually by private vehicle.

Accommodation Styles

Southern Tanzania offers a range of accommodation options, from rustic tented camps that provide a close-to-nature experience to more luxurious lodges with excellent amenities. Tented camps often feature comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms, offering an authentic safari feel. Lodges may include swimming pools, fine dining, and stunning views.

In Zanzibar, you can choose from boutique hotels in Stone Town, offering a glimpse into the island’s history, to a wide array of beach resorts ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to high-end luxury villas. Your choice will significantly influence the overall cost of your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package.

Customizing Your Package

Top Guide Adventures excels at creating tailor-made itineraries. Whether you’re a keen photographer, a wildlife enthusiast focused on specific species, a couple seeking a romantic getaway, or a family with children, your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package can be adjusted. We can extend your stay in particular parks, arrange specific activities like fly camping, or focus more time on relaxation in Zanzibar. For 2026-2027, early booking is recommended, especially for peak season travel, to secure your preferred lodges and flights.

Understanding the Cost of Your 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Package

The cost of a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package can vary significantly based on several factors. For 2026-2027 travel, understanding these elements will help you budget appropriately.

Key Cost Determinants:

  • Accommodation Level: This is often the largest cost factor. Staying in luxury lodges and high-end beach resorts will naturally be more expensive than mid-range or more basic tented camps and guesthouses.
  • Time of Year: Peak safari season (June-October) and peak beach season (December-February) typically command higher prices due to demand. Traveling in the shoulder seasons might offer savings.
  • Group Size: Private tours are generally more expensive per person than joining a small group safari, especially if you have a larger group.
  • Inclusions: Packages that include more activities, higher quality meals, or exclusive services will be priced higher.
  • Internal Flights: The cost of internal flights can add a significant amount to the package price.

Budgeting for 2026-2027: Estimated Ranges

As a general guideline for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package, you might expect prices to range from:

  • Mid-Range: Approximately $3,500 – $5,500 per person. This typically includes comfortable mid-range lodges and beach hotels, most meals, internal flights, park fees, and guided activities.
  • Luxury: Approximately $5,500 – $9,000+ per person. This level includes high-end lodges and resorts, gourmet dining, potentially more exclusive guiding services, and premium internal flights.

Frequently Asked Questions about Southern Tanzania Safaris and Zanzibar

Here are some common questions potential travelers might have about a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package.

Q1: Is Southern Tanzania really less crowded than the Northern Circuit?

A: Yes, generally Southern Tanzania’s parks like Ruaha and Nyerere receive significantly fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater. This means you’ll often have game viewing areas almost to yourself, offering a more exclusive and intimate wildlife experience. This is a major draw for travelers in 2026-2027 seeking a less commercialized safari.

Q2: What is the best way to travel between Southern Tanzania parks and Zanzibar?

A: The most efficient and recommended method is by scheduled light aircraft flights. These flights connect the airstrips near the parks directly to Zanzibar’s airport (ZNZ). This saves considerable travel time compared to road transfers and offers scenic aerial views.

Q3: Can I see the “Big Five” in Southern Tanzania?

A: Yes, it is possible to see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) in Southern Tanzania. While rhinos are rare and elusive in these parks, lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo are commonly sighted. Southern Tanzania is particularly renowned for its large lion prides and significant elephant populations.

Q4: What kind of activities can I do in Zanzibar besides relaxing on the beach?

A: Zanzibar offers a wealth of activities. You can explore the historic Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site), visit spice plantations, go snorkeling or diving in the clear waters, try water sports like kitesurfing, take a sunset dhow cruise, visit Jozani Forest to see red colobus monkeys, or explore local markets.

Q5: What is the best time of year for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package?

A: The dry season, from June to October, is ideal for safaris as wildlife is concentrated around water sources. This period also offers pleasant weather in Zanzibar. For 2026-2027, this window provides the best combination of safari conditions and beach weather, though it is also peak season.

Q6: How much should I budget for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package in 2026-2027?

A: A mid-range package typically costs between $3,500 – $5,500 per person, while a luxury package can range from $5,500 – $9,000+ per person. Prices depend heavily on accommodation choice, time of year, and inclusions. It’s best to get a personalized quote.

Q7: What should I pack for this trip?

A: Pack light, neutral-colored clothing for safari, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent. For Zanzibar, swimwear, light cotton clothes, and comfortable walking shoes are essential. A light jacket or fleece for cooler evenings is also advisable.
