10-Day Uganda Gorillas And Tanzania Safari: Ultimate Itinerary & Planning

A 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari offers an unparalleled adventure, typically beginning with tracking endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, followed by wildlife viewing in Tanzania’s iconic Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. This combined journey provides a rich experience of East Africa’s most sought-after wildlife encounters, blending primate encounters with the classic savanna safari. For 2026-2027, planning involves securing permits well in advance, choosing between fly-in or overland travel between countries, and selecting lodges that match your budget and comfort preferences, with prices generally ranging from $4,500 to $9,000+ per person, depending on accommodation and inclusions.

Understanding the 10-Day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari Combination

Embarking on a 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari is a dream for many wildlife enthusiasts. This condensed yet comprehensive itinerary is designed to maximize your experience of two of Africa’s most distinct and awe-inspiring natural wonders: the dense rainforests of Uganda, home to mountain gorillas, and the vast, wildlife-rich plains of Tanzania. While ten days is a relatively short period for such an ambitious trip, careful planning and efficient logistics can make it an unforgettable reality.

The core appeal of this safari lies in its potent combination. You’ll witness the gentle giants, the mountain gorillas, in their natural habitat in Uganda, an experience that is both profound and emotionally moving. Following this, you’ll transition to Tanzania for the quintessential African safari, exploring the endless savannas of the Serengeti, famous for the Great Migration and incredible predator-prey action, and descending into the geological marvel that is the Ngorongoro Crater, a caldera teeming with diverse wildlife.

This journey is logistically challenging but incredibly rewarding. It requires swift movement between two countries, often involving flights to save precious travel time. For travelers planning their adventure for 2026 or 2027, understanding the nuances of this multi-country trip is key to a smooth and enjoyable experience. We’ll break down what such a safari typically entails, the best routes, what to expect, and how to best plan it with a trusted operator like Top Guide Adventures.

Why Combine Uganda and Tanzania? The Unique Appeal

The decision to combine Uganda and Tanzania for a safari is driven by a desire for diversity and iconic wildlife experiences that are hard to replicate elsewhere. Each country offers a distinct flavor of African wilderness:

  • Uganda: The Primate Paradise. Known as the ‘Pearl of Africa’, Uganda’s primary draw is its thriving population of mountain gorillas. Trekking through the misty Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to encounter these magnificent creatures is a bucket-list item for many. Beyond gorillas, Uganda offers opportunities to see chimpanzees and other primates, alongside a rich birdlife and varied landscapes.
  • Tanzania: The Classic Safari Heart. Tanzania is synonymous with the African safari. The Serengeti National Park is world-renowned for its vast plains, dramatic predator sightings, and the spectacular Great Migration. The Ngorongoro Crater offers a unique, self-contained ecosystem within a collapsed volcano, boasting an exceptionally high density of wildlife, including the Big Five.

By merging these two destinations, travelers get the best of both worlds: the intimate, life-changing experience of gorilla trekking combined with the expansive, thrilling wildlife spectacles of Tanzania’s northern circuit. This synergy makes the 10-day itinerary a powerful, albeit fast-paced, exploration of East Africa’s natural heritage.

Crafting the 10-Day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari Itinerary: A Typical Flow

A 10-day itinerary is tight, demanding efficiency. Most tours begin in Uganda and then fly to Tanzania, or vice versa, to save considerable travel time. Here’s a commonly structured itinerary, focusing on maximizing wildlife encounters within the limited timeframe:

Days 1-4: Uganda – Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe & Transfer to Kampala/Entebbe
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your accommodation. Depending on your flight schedule, you might spend the night in Entebbe or transfer to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. This day is for rest and preparation for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, you’ll start a scenic drive (approximately 8-10 hours) southwest towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey takes you through lush countryside, local villages, and the rolling hills of the Western Rift Valley. You’ll likely stop for lunch en route. Your accommodation will be near the park’s entry points, such as Buhoma or Ruhija.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Day
This is the highlight of your Uganda leg. After an early breakfast and a briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll head into the dense Bwindi forest with your experienced ranger guide. The trek duration can vary from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorilla family’s location. The experience of finding and observing a family of mountain gorillas for an hour is profoundly moving. You’ll witness their social interactions, feeding habits, and the unique bond within the troop. After the trek, you’ll return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest.

Day 4: Optional Chimpanzee Trekking or Transfer to Kisoro/Fly to Tanzania
Depending on your chosen lodge location and flight schedule, you might have the option for a second activity, such as a chimpanzee trek in a nearby forest or a nature walk. Alternatively, you’ll begin your journey towards Tanzania. The most efficient way is to transfer to a local airstrip (like Kisoro or Kihihi) for a domestic flight to Entebbe, connecting to a flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Tanzania. This flight path is crucial for saving time on a 10-day trip.

Days 4-10: Tanzania – Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari

Day 4 (continued): Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Arusha
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted by your Tanzanian guide and transferred to Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania. You’ll check into your lodge and have dinner, preparing for the Tanzanian safari adventure.

Day 5: Arusha to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Arusha Airport (ARK) for a short, scenic bush flight into the heart of the Serengeti National Park. This flight offers incredible aerial views of the changing landscapes. Upon landing at a central Serengeti airstrip, your Tanzanian safari guide will meet you. You’ll begin your game drive en route to your lodge or tented camp, immediately immersing yourself in the Serengeti’s vast plains. Keep an eye out for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and vast herds of wildebeest and zebras.

Day 6: Full Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park
A full day dedicated to exploring the Serengeti. Depending on the time of year, your guide will position you to witness the Great Migration or focus on areas known for excellent predator sightings. You’ll track lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs, marveling at the sheer abundance of wildlife. The Serengeti offers some of the most iconic safari landscapes in Africa, with acacia-dotted plains and rocky kopjes.

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, you’ll take a game drive as you exit the park, heading towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You’ll drive to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, where your lodge will offer spectacular views into the caldera. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the sunset over this natural wonder.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater Tour & Transfer to Karatu/Arusha
An early morning descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a caldera formed by a volcanic eruption, now home to an incredible concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) in a relatively small area. You’ll spend several hours exploring the crater floor, looking for rare black rhinos and enjoying the diverse fauna. In the afternoon, you’ll ascend the crater and begin your drive back towards Arusha or a lodge near Karatu for an overnight stay, depending on your flight schedule for the next day.

Day 9: Optional Cultural Visit or Relaxation & Transfer to Arusha
This day can be used for optional activities such as visiting a Maasai village for a cultural experience, exploring local markets, or simply relaxing at your lodge. If you stayed in Karatu, you’ll have a leisurely drive back to Arusha. This day ensures you are well-rested and ready for departure, with buffer time for any unforeseen delays.

Day 10: Departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time for last-minute souvenir shopping in Arusha. You’ll then be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your international flight home, filled with memories of gorillas and the vast African plains.

Logistics and Travel Between Uganda and Tanzania

The biggest challenge in a 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari is the geographical distance and the time required to travel between the two countries. Efficient logistics are paramount.

Key Travel Options:

  • Flying: This is the most practical and recommended method for a 10-day trip. Domestic flights within Uganda (e.g., from Bwindi to Entebbe) and regional flights (e.g., Entebbe to Kilimanjaro) significantly cut down travel time. These flights often offer stunning aerial views.
  • Overland Travel: While possible, driving between Uganda and Tanzania for this specific itinerary would consume too much of your limited 10 days. The journey can take 2-3 days or more, involving border crossings, which can be time-consuming. Therefore, for a 10-day safari, overland travel is generally not advised.

Visa and Entry Requirements:

Ensure you have the necessary visas for both Uganda and Tanzania. Depending on your nationality, you may be able to obtain visas on arrival, but it’s often advisable to arrange them in advance to avoid delays. Check the latest requirements for your country of citizenship well before your travel dates in 2026-2027.

Permits:

Gorilla permits are essential and highly limited. These must be booked months, sometimes up to a year, in advance, especially for peak seasons. The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda is currently $700 per person. For a 10-day trip, securing these permits is a top priority.

When is the Best Time for Your 10-Day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari (2026-2027)?

The best time to undertake this combined safari depends on your priorities, particularly regarding weather and wildlife viewing opportunities.

  • Dry Seasons (June to October, December to February): These are generally considered the prime times for both Uganda and Tanzania.
  • Uganda: During the dry months, trekking conditions in Bwindi are easier with less rainfall and mud. Gorilla sightings remain excellent year-round, but dry conditions make the hikes more comfortable.
  • Tanzania: The dry season is ideal for game viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Roads are in better condition, and animals tend to congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. The Great Migration typically moves through the Serengeti during these periods, though its exact location varies monthly.
  • Shoulder Seasons (March to May, November): These months often bring rain, which can make trekking in Uganda more challenging and roads in Tanzania muddier. However, fewer crowds and lower prices can be an advantage. The landscapes are lush and green, offering beautiful photographic opportunities.

For 2026-2027, planning to travel during the dry season (June-October or Dec-Feb) will offer the most comfortable trekking and optimal game viewing, but also expect higher prices and more crowds. The shoulder seasons can offer great value if you are prepared for potential rain.

Cost Considerations for a 10-Day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari (2026-2027)

The cost of a 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari can vary significantly based on several factors. It’s crucial to get a personalized quote from a reputable tour operator.

Key Cost Drivers:

  • Accommodation: Lodges and camps range from budget-friendly to ultra-luxury. High-end lodges with prime locations and amenities will significantly increase the overall cost.
  • Gorilla Permit: The Uganda gorilla permit is a fixed cost, currently $700 per person. This is a substantial portion of the Uganda portion of the trip.
  • Internal Flights: Flights between Uganda and Tanzania, and domestic flights within Tanzania (e.g., to the Serengeti), are necessary for this short itinerary and add to the budget.
  • Park Fees: Entrance fees for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are daily charges and accumulate quickly.
  • Private vs. Group Safari: Private safaris offer more flexibility and personalized service but come at a higher cost per person compared to joining a group safari.
  • Time of Year: Peak seasons (dry months) are typically more expensive than the low or shoulder seasons.

Estimated Price Range (2026-2027):

For a 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari, you can expect:

  • Mid-Range: $4,500 – $6,500 per person. This typically includes comfortable mid-tier lodges, internal flights, park fees, permits, and a private vehicle and guide.
  • Luxury: $7,000 – $9,000+ per person. This level includes high-end lodges, premium services, often more exclusive locations, and potentially more personalized guiding experiences.

Important Note: These are estimates. The exact cost will depend on the specific lodges chosen, the exact flight routes, and the level of service desired. It’s always best to request a detailed quote tailored to your preferences.

What’s Typically Included:

  • Gorilla trekking permit for Uganda
  • Park entrance fees for all parks
  • Accommodation as per itinerary
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Drinking water during game drives
  • English-speaking driver-guides
  • 4×4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof
  • Internal flights (Uganda to Tanzania, domestic Tanzania flights)
  • Airport transfers
  • Bottled water on safari

What’s Typically Excluded:

  • International flights
  • Visa fees
  • Travel insurance
  • Gratuities for guides and lodge staff
  • Personal expenses (souvenirs, laundry, alcoholic drinks)
  • Optional activities not listed in the itinerary

Preparing for Your 10-Day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari

Successful preparation is key to enjoying this complex itinerary. Here are essential tips for travelers planning their 2026-2027 adventure:

Packing Essentials:

  • Clothing: Lightweight, neutral-colored clothing is best for safaris. Pack long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against sun and insects. A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential for Bwindi’s unpredictable weather and cooler evenings.
  • Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy hiking boots are a must for gorilla trekking. For game drives and around lodges, comfortable walking shoes or trainers suffice.
  • Health: Consult your doctor about necessary vaccinations (Yellow Fever is often required) and malaria prophylaxis. Carry a basic first-aid kit, insect repellent (DEET-based), and hand sanitizer.
  • Gear: Binoculars for wildlife viewing, a good camera with extra batteries and memory cards, a headlamp or flashlight, and a waterproof bag for your trekking gear.
  • Documents: Passport (valid for at least 6 months), visas, flight tickets, gorilla permits, vaccination certificates, and travel insurance details.

Physical Fitness for Gorilla Trekking:

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through steep, sometimes muddy, and challenging terrain. While you don’t need to be an elite athlete, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Porters are available at park entrances for a small fee to help carry your backpack and provide assistance on the trail, which can greatly enhance the experience.

Choosing Your Tour Operator:

Given the complexity of this itinerary, selecting a reputable and experienced tour operator is vital. Look for companies that:

  • Have extensive experience in both Uganda and Tanzania.
  • Offer customizable itineraries.
  • Provide clear, detailed itineraries and cost breakdowns.
  • Have excellent reviews and a strong track record.
  • Are responsive to your inquiries.

Top Guide Adventures specializes in creating smooth safari experiences across Tanzania and can expertly arrange the Uganda portion of your trip, ensuring all logistics, permits, and flights are handled efficiently. Comparing Uganda Gorilla Trekking vs. Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

While this itinerary focuses on Uganda, it’s worth noting the comparison with Rwanda for gorilla trekking, as some travelers consider this when planning. Both countries offer incredible mountain gorilla experiences, but there are key differences:

  • Cost: Uganda’s gorilla permits are significantly cheaper ($700) than Rwanda’s ($1,500). This makes Uganda a more budget-friendly option for gorilla trekking.
  • Trekking Experience: Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is denser and more rugged, often leading to longer, more challenging treks. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is generally more accessible, with shorter, less strenuous treks.
  • Gorilla Families: Both countries have habituated gorilla families. Uganda has more habituated families, potentially offering more availability.
  • Other Wildlife: Tanzania offers iconic savanna wildlife. Uganda’s primary draw is primates, though it also has diverse birdlife and other mammals. Rwanda also offers chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest and savanna safaris in Akagera National Park.

For a 10-day combined safari that includes Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro, choosing Uganda for gorillas is often the more economical and logistically sensible choice, especially when considering the overall budget and time constraints.

The Great Migration: Timing Your Serengeti Visit

If witnessing the Great Migration is a priority for your 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari, understanding its timing is crucial. The migration is a continuous movement of millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

  • December – March: The herds are usually in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area (bordering Ngorongoro Conservation Area) for calving season.
  • April – May: This is the ‘long rains’ period, and the herds begin moving northwards, often in large, dispersed groups.
  • June – July: The migration is typically in the western Serengeti, heading towards the Grumeti River. River crossings can be spectacular during this time.
  • August – October: The herds are often in the northern Serengeti, approaching the Mara River. This is another prime time for dramatic river crossings.
  • November: The migration begins to move southwards again, often following the rains.

For a 10-day trip, you might catch parts of the migration depending on the month, but it’s not guaranteed to see a specific event like a river crossing unless your itinerary aligns perfectly. However, the Serengeti always teems with resident wildlife, ensuring incredible game viewing regardless of the migration’s exact location.

Maximizing Your 10-Day Experience: Tips for Success

To ensure your 10-day Uganda Gorillas and Tanzania Safari is as rewarding as possible, consider these tips:

  • Book Early: Especially for 2026-2027 travel, book well in advance to secure gorilla permits, flights, and preferred accommodations.
  • Be Flexible: While itineraries are planned, wildlife viewing is unpredictable. Embrace the adventure and be open to your guide’s recommendations.
  • Communicate Your Interests: Let your tour operator know your specific interests (e.g., photography, birding, predator sightings) so they can tailor game drives.
  • Pack Light but Smart: Remember that internal flights often have stricter luggage weight limits than international carriers.
  • Stay Hydrated and Healthy: Drink plenty of water and follow health recommendations to avoid illness.
  • Respect Wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from animals, especially gorillas, and follow all park rules and guide instructions.

Potential Itinerary Variations for a 10-Day Trip

While the outlined itinerary is a common structure, variations are possible to suit different interests or budgets:

  • Focus on Uganda: If gorillas are the absolute priority, you could extend your Uganda stay, perhaps adding a chimpanzee trekking experience in Kibale National Park or a safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and shorten the Tanzania portion.
  • Focus on Tanzania: Conversely, if the classic safari is paramount, you could spend more time in the Serengeti or add a visit to another park like Tarangire National Park (known for elephants and baobab trees) or Lake Manyara National Park (famous for tree-climbing lions), potentially reducing the time in Uganda to a single gorilla trek.
  • Fly-in Safaris: For maximum time efficiency, opt for fly-in safaris in Tanzania. This means flying directly from Entebbe to the Serengeti, bypassing overland travel to Arusha and then another flight. This is the most expensive option but saves significant time.

Top Guide Adventures can help you customize these options to fit your exact needs for a 2026-2027 trip.

Great Wildlife, but accommodation could be better
Sarah L. · Australia · 20 Jun 2026

Our 3 Days in Tarangire National Park were filled with incredible sights. We saw so many elephants, including large family groups, and the baobab trees are truly majestic. The park is beautiful and the wildlife viewing was top-notch. Our guide was very good at spotting animals and navigating the park. However, the lodge we stayed at for the two nights was a bit basic and not quite what we expected for the price. While the wildlife experience was 5-star, the lodging brought the overall rating down slightly. We enjoyed the park itself immensely and would recommend it, but perhaps look into different accommodation options if booking a similar package.
